Three steps and you are done

Caret is not in the Edge store yet, so it installs the way developers install extensions: from a folder. It takes about a minute, and you only do it once.

Download again caret.zip · 1.5 MB · nothing to run, nothing to sign in to

  1. Unzip it somewhere permanent

    Right-click the downloaded caret.zip → Extract All. Put the folder somewhere it will stay — Documents\extensions\ is ideal.

    Not your Downloads folder, and not inside OneDrive. If the folder is moved, renamed or synced away later, the browser switches the extension off.

  2. Open the extensions page and turn on Developer mode

    Paste edge://extensions into the address bar (Chrome: chrome://extensions) and flip Developer mode on — it is the switch in the bottom-left corner.

  3. Load unpacked → pick the caret folder

    Click Load unpacked, find the folder you just unzipped, and select it. Caret appears in the list straight away.

    “Manifest file is missing or unreadable”? You are one level too high. Double-click into the folder until you can see manifest.json in the file list, then choose that folder.

That is it. Pin Caret from the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar, reload any tab you already had open, and start typing. Next stop, if you want it: the setup guide.

Why is there a zip at all?

Browsers only allow one-click installs from their own stores. Everything else has to arrive as a folder you load yourself — that is a rule Edge and Chrome enforce, not a corner being cut here.

The upside is that you can see exactly what you are running: the zip is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with a word list. Nothing is compiled, nothing phones home, and you can read every line of it.
